BC: SMS is one of those gobsmackingly non-obvious 'emergent' developments of network technology. Originally designed to carry technical messages and service-outage notices to users, it has become the mega cash-cow of the mobile business and is also making a major contribution to interactive Television revenues (by 2004, about 20% of Endomol's profits were from SMS-related revenues - feedback for their Big Brother and other 'interactive' formats.) It's a classic example of bottom-up emergence and appropriation/adaptation. It's people-generated content.
